Well here`s my review for the Japanese "Stitch!" anime.
I must say that when I first heard about the anime in 2008 I was quite surprised because I didn`t expect there would be any more Stitch related shows after the conclusion that "Leroy & Stitch" gave to the original series.
The show features Stitch crash landing on a fictional Japanese island in Okinawa and meats a new friend named Yuna (Originally named Hanako during the anime`s production), a 9 year old tomboyish, Karate master who lives with her grandmother. Like Lilo in the original series, Yuna befriends Stitch and throughout the series they both experience many exciting adventures and meet countless new friends. When Stitch discovers the Spiritual Stone and all the wishes it could grant he is eager to have his wish to become the most powerful ruler in the universe, but he would half to do 43 good deeds before his wish could come true. Jumba creates a good deed counter for Stitch to keep track of his good deeds, which he wears on his arm throughout Seasons 1 and 2.
I didn`t start watching the anime until ChrisDilke started uploading the English dub on his original YouTube account. After enjoying the first two episodes I decided to carry on watching the anime and I can tell you all how I really enjoyed it. I don`t find it as enjoyable as "Lilo & Stitch: The Series" but still I thought it was great, it`s definitely worth watching. I think a lot of people hate Yuna because of how she re-placed Lilo. But I like Yuna, I think she`s a great character and she should be loved as much as Lilo. I also think that Yuna`s Karate is just as great as Lilo`s Hula. One thing that I don`t quite understand is how Yuna is able to teach her own Karate class, I never knew that 9 year olds where able to teach classes, oh well I suppose it`s because Yuna`s so good at learning Karate that she`s able teach it to others as well.
Seasons 1 and 2 are very eventful indeed, I haven`t seen much of Season 3 yet because I don`t understand Japanese and I`d rather wait for the season`s English dub, which is not out yet. Although I have seen a couple of the Japanese episodes (some of which were given English subtitles by other YouTube users) and I know in that season Yuna and Stitch move off to live with Yuna`s mean bullying cousin (a character that I cannot stand). Perhaps I`ll post up a separate review for Season 3 as soon as the English dub is out.
Now we all know that the anime was originally meant to be an alternate reality to the "Lilo & Stitch" franchise, then when the English dub came out it was made to seem as if it was sequel to the franchise (which was actually confirmed true for anime when the Japanese "Lilo" episode came out in Season 3). It stated in the first episode that Stitch had left Lilo because she`d dumped him for a boyfriend, this was one of the things that really shocked me because I could not believe that Lilo would do such a thing, I was like "WHAT! Why would Lilo abandon Stitch like that? It`s insane".
Of course it wasn`t until the "Lilo" episode came out when we finally found out the real reason why Lilo and Stitch had been separated, it was all the result of a terrible mis-understanding. I was very happy when I saw the "Lilo" episode because I knew there was no way she would have dumped him for anything and I loved how she and Stitch had a happy reunion at the end of the episode. It also reveals in this episode that Lilo is now a fully grown adult and has a daughter named Kidda, who looks exactly like her when she young. I loved Kidda as much as Lilo and I hope we`ll see them both again soon.
There some other things that bug me about the anime. Since it was originally an alternate reality but then converted into a sequel, it has left a number of plot holes and continuity issues from the alternate reality plot. One example of this is how Stitch seemed to have no talent at all in singing. If any of you remember the episode from Season 1 where he, Yuna and her friend Taro enter that singing competition and Stitch found he could not sing. In the "Lilo & Stitch" series he was a great singer, like for example in "Leroy & Stitch" where he sings "Aloha Oe" to shut down Hamsterviel`s Leroy army.
I also feel that some of the characters like Angel are being portrayed out of character. Although we didn`t get to see much of Angel in the original series I felt she was quite a nice character there, while in the anime she behaves most of the time like a total jerk. I truly hate how badly she treated Stitch in the anime, it was always as if she was mad at him for one reason or another and sometimes I felt she didn`t actually care about him at all (especially after she cheated him in one of Season 3`s episodes). But I`m not really blaming Angel because it`s not really her fault, it`s all the fault of the writers for making her into such a jerk. I also still support Stitch and Angel as a couple because I think they look cute together, but it would have been much better if Angel was much nicer to Stitch.
Out of all these Plot issues, the one that`s bugging me the most is the fact that Gantu and Reuben (Experiment 625) are strangely back on the evil side. As you all remember in "Leroy & Stitch" Gantu and Reuben turned good and joined The Galactic Federation after helping the Ohana to defeat Hamsterviel and his army, yet in the anime they are mysteriously back with Hamsterviel, this does not make any sense at all. Also what happened to Leroy and all the rest of his clones, did they all just disappear all of a sudden? Disney don`t half confuse us sometimes!
Anyway that`s all my review on the anime, as I said I might post up a separate review for the third season as soon as I`ve seen the English dub, so be sure to watch out for it.
