Well everyone, as I`ve already posted up a review on “The Lilo & Stitch film series” I just thought I`d post up a separate review for the TV series.
“Lilo & Stitch: The Series” continues on where “Stitch: The Movie!” left off, charting Lilo and Stitch`s efforts to hunt and re-capture all the rest of Stitch`s cousins, turn them all to good and find their one true places before they wreck mayhem. Standing in their way is their evil nemesis Gantu (The ex-captain of the Galactic Armada) and Reuben (Experiment 625), who are trying to capture the experiments for the evil, imprisoned Dr Hamsterviel.
Throughout the series Lilo and Stitch experience many exciting adventures as they encounter harder and more dangerous experiments. Whenever an experiment is activated they must find a way to stop the experiment and turn it good before it`s causes too much mayhem and destruction. Furthermore they must ensure that each experiment is captured before Gantu gets his hands on them.
One of the things I really liked about the series was how it made crossovers with “Recess, Kim Possible, The Proud Family” and “The American Dragon”, I think it`s great to see other cartoon characters interacting with each other. These crossovers where inspired by the original movie`s teaser trailers which featured Stitch entering other Disney films. I think a crossover with “Lloyd in Space” would have been great too, I really wish they`d have done that.
Although the series is rather predictable I find it exciting, enjoyable and breathtaking, and I consider it one of the best Disney cartoon shows ever made. The thing that makes the series a bit predictable is the fact that it appears to be obvious of what is going to happen at the end of each episode, Lilo and Stitch are going to capture the experiment, turn it good and find it`s one true place. However there are a couple of episodes where Gantu does manage to catch an experiment, so it can`t be that predictable.
Sadly the series only ran for 2 Seasons and spanned a total of 65 episodes. Out of all the 625 experiments which Lilo and Stitch where meant to capture, we only go to see about 105 of them altogether. This is one of the things that I find really disappointing because I think it would have been better off if the series had been kept going for much longer so that we could have seen much more of the experiments, this might have made the series bigger, stronger and more of a hit. But I suppose the writers where getting short of ideas towards the end.
One thing that sort of bugs me about the series is the fact that Stitch was meant to be immune to all the other experiment`s powers, since in the episode “Angel” Jumba mentions that Stitch and Rueben where immune to Angel`s evil song because they were built after her. Yet in the series Stitch gets affected by about 15 experiments built before him. If Stitch was meant to be immune to the other experiments then why didn`t the writers follow this fact? But I suppose to be honest Stitch isn`t immune to every experiment, just some like Angel and Checkers.
Also as I said in my review for the movie series, another thing that bugs me about the series is how Lilo seemed to be less appreciated than Stitch. Stitch is the more popular character, but Lilo is just as important and I feel it`s very disappointing that she was never given as much attention, nor as much development as Stitch. I always felt Lilo deserved just as much attention (although a couple of episodes like “Remmy” did centre on her). Lilo`s major role in the series was having to help Stitch to capture the experiments as well as dealing with her own personal problems, like having to obey Nani`s strict rules, being on time for Hula class and having to deal with her rival, Mertle.
What`s more Disney sometimes seemed to want us to hate Lilo for some un-explained reasons. There were certain episodes in the series where Lilo was portrayed quite out of character. The biggest example of this is the episode “Elastico” where she ignores Stitch while trying to prepare for her Hula show. I admit that I hated her in that episode because she was so out of character. But I always managed to forgive her in the end when she realised her mistakes.
One more thing I would like to say before I end my review, we know that in the episode “Swapper” of the second season Lilo meat a new friend of her age named Victoria, who also joins her Hula class. It was really great that Lilo finally found a human friend to play with, I loved that. Despite Mertle`s best efforts to steal her from Lilo, Victoria revealed that she loved wired things too, so she and Lilo became best friends (Much to Mertle`s anger). But sadly after “Swapper” Victoria hardly ever appears again in the series which is the thing that I find the most disappointing because Victoria is a great character and a good friend to Lilo, she definitely deserved far more appearances than she got. I would have loved to see her helping Lilo and Stitch to capture all the other experiments; they would certainly have made a great team. She got another main role in the “Snooty” episode, but after that she totally becomes a background character.
I did meet another Lilo & Stitch fan in Uni last year and when we were discussing about Victoria`s lack of appearances this is what he said to me, “Perhaps the producers thought, OK Lilo`s now got a new friend, but we don`t want to confuse anyone”. Possibly that was why Victoria was hardly ever used, the producers where possibly worried about confusing some viewers. But still it`s not enough to convince me because I still say Victoria should have had far more appearances and more character development.
Anyway that`s all my review on the series, soon I shall be posting up a review for the anime as well so be sure to look out for it.
