As it`s getting close to the 10th anniversary of the original “Lilo & Stitch” movie I just thought I`d post up my review on the whole film series.
“Lilo & Stitch” is my all time favourite Disney movie, although I must admit that at first I had no interest in seeing the movie when it was first released into theatres. It wasn`t until I accidently saw the episode “Cannonball” from “Lilo & Stitch: The series” when I started gaining my interest in “Lilo & Stitch”. After accidently watching and enjoying the “Cannonball” episode I decided to buy the original movie on VHS and I can tell you all how I really enjoyed it, it`s all really exciting and breathtaking. After watching the movie on VHS I decided to buy it (and all the sequels) on DVD, and collect all the episodes of the TV series.
“Lilo & Stitch” is all a great story about a lonely little girl named Lilo who adopts what she believed was a dog. She names him Stitch; totally unaware he was a dangerous destructive alien who had escaped from a far away planet. At first Stitch just attempts to use Lilo as a protection shield from Jumba (his creator) and Pleakley, two other aliens who are sent to re-capture him. Lilo`s attempts to turn Stitch good at first prove to be time wasting, but in the end Stitch begins to develop feelings for Lilo and learns the spirit of Ohana and family (despite what he was designed to do).
“Lilo & Stitch” is one of the few Disney movies to be set in the present year of its release (2002), and also the first animated movie to be set on the Hawaiian Islands; I really enjoyed learning about Hawaii and the Hawaiian traditions because I knew nothing about Hawaii or their traditions until I watched the movie. I owe Disney and Chris Sanders so much for bringing this awesome movie to life.
I know “Stitch! The Movie” was made before “Lilo & Stitch 2”, but since the events of “Lilo & Stitch 2” take place first I thought I`d review that movie next.
Anyway in “Lilo & Stitch 2” (set about 1 year after the events of the original movie) Stitch is living a reasonably good life with Lilo until he starts to glitch, this is due to the fact that Jumba did not get a chance to finish charging his molecules before they were both arrested. At first this glitch causes Stitch to revert to his original destructive programming, but would eventually kill him if Jumba could not build the fusion chamber machine to recharge him before all his energy runs out. Meanwhile Lilo is having problems thinking of a Hula dance for a Hula competition she`s about to compete in. After she learns that her mother won it when she was her age she becomes determined to win it and desperately tries to get Stitch to help her out. But Stitch continues to have outbursts from his glitch which start causing more problems for Lilo and ruin her chances of winning the competition. Lilo gets increasingly mad at Stitch because she is so concerned about winning the competition and she doesn`t understand that the trouble he`s causing now is not his fault. To make matters worse, Jumba is having problems building the fusion chamber because he does not have the proper technology to build it. Can Jumba build the machine in time and can Lilo find out what is wrong with Stitch before it`s too late?
I don`t find this movie as enjoyable as the others since it does not feature any villains and I prefer the movies where the heroes half to fight the villains. Unfortunately I met someone in Uni who believed “Lilo & Stitch 2” was dumb and un-worthy for a movie and felt it should have been put into a 30 minute episode in the TV series, I can see the point he`s got since basically all you have is Lilo going to a Hula competition and Stitch turning evil again. But still I think “Lilo & Stitch 2” is a great movie, it`s not bad at all. It`s well plotted out and definitely something you wouldn`t want to miss. One thing that is great about “Lilo & Stitch 2” is how it keeps the original movie`s atmosphere while most other Disney sequels have more childish atmospheres.
One thing that really annoys me is the fact that “Lilo & Stitch 2” was originally going to be released into theatres like the original movie, but instead went straight to DVD and Video. I feel bitterly disappointed that Disney did this, especially since they put “Return to Never Land” and “Jungle Book 2” in theatres. I think “Return to Never Land” was ok as it still resembled the atmosphere of original “Peter Pan” movie, except the characters where more childlike. But how the stupid “Jungle Book 2” ended up in theatres, I don`t know. I`ve got no idea why Disney believed “Jungle Book 2” was worthy for the theatres, it was just dumb, childish and nothing like the original movie at all. If only “Lilo & Stitch 2” had been released into theatres it might have made the “Lilo & Stitch” franchise more popular and might have saved it all from being terminated. But I guess the reason it went straight to DVD was because it was only 65 minutes long, perhaps if it was about 15 minutes longer it might have made its way to the theatres. But so far, I don`t know.
In “Stitch! The Movie” Stitch is having problems fitting in with the rest of Kauai, as he his constantly causing trouble and feels lost with no cousins. But he and Lilo later discover that Jumba had made 625 other experiments before him (Stitch was Experiment 626) and had secretly sneaked them onto Earth. They also find out that Jumba`s former partner, Dr Hamsterviel (the main Villain of the Franchise) wants the experiments back to form an army to take over the galaxy. Lilo and Stitch are determined to stop him from doing so and as Hamsterviel attempts to get away with the experiments, Lilo and Stitch successfully steal them back, but accidently set all the dormant experiment pods lose on the whole Island of Kauai. As the movie ends, Lilo and Stitch set off on their mission to re-capture all the experiments, turn them all to good and find their one true places before they wreak mayhem. This is the point where the TV series begins (7 experiments are activated in this movie).
This is the shortest movie in the franchise; it only reaches about 57 minutes. Originally this movie was going to titled “Lilo & Stitch: A New Ohana”, but the title was changed when the producers made a decision to have only Stitch`s name in the title. They also planned to have only Stitch`s name in the title of “Lilo & Stitch: The series”, which was going to be called “Stitch! The Series”, but the idea was eventually abolished when they decided they should have Lilo`s name in the title too, which results in both the movie and the TV series having miss-matched titles. This is the one thing that bugs me because it seemed that Lilo was being less appreciated. Throughout the TV series (and franchise) Lilo was never given as much attention nor as much development as Stitch. Stitch of course is the more popular character, but Lilo is just as important. I feel it`s really disappointing that two of the film titles (“Stitch! The Movie and “Leroy & Stitch”) don`t contain Lilo`s name, while Stitch`s name has appeared on all the titles.
In “Leroy & Stitch”, the fourth and final movie in the franchise (set after the events of Lilo & Stitch: The series) Lilo and Stitch have successfully captured all the experiments and found their one true places. As rewards for their efforts, Lilo and her family are honored as heroes by the Galactic Alliance. Jumba is given the confiscated key to his laboratory again, Pleakley is offered a post as chairman of Earth Studies at G.A.C.C. (Galactic Alliance Community College), Stitch is made the Captain of the Galactic Armada and commander of his new commissioned ship BRB-9000 (Big Red Battleship) and Lilo is made Galactic Federation Ambassador to Earth and sole guardian of Stitch's "cousins". At first Jumba, Pleakly and Stitch turn down their awards to remain on Earth with Lilo so as not to make her sad, but Lilo later decides to let them go when she realizes how much they desire their awards. But little do they know that Gantu (The former captain of the Galactic Armada and Lilo and Stitch`s nemesis from the TV series) has broken the evil Dr Hamsterviel out of prison to help him re-gain his power to take over the galaxy. With Gantu`s help Hamsterviel forces Jumba to create an exact replica experiment of Stitch, which would help him gain his power and he names the experiment Leroy. To make matters worse Hamsterviel makes more than a 100 clones of Leroy to form an invincible army. It`s now up to Lilo to gather Stitch, Jumba, Pleakley and all the rest of Stitch`s cousins to battle Hamsterviel and his Leroy army before he takes over the galaxy forever.
This is my favourite of the “Lilo & Stitch” sequels, the reason is because this is the first time we see all of Stitch`s cousins fighting together against Hamsterviel, I really enjoy the battle scene and I consider it one of the most exciting and breathtaking moments in the franchise. But still I don`t think the movie is as great as the original movie (I don`t believe any of the sequels match the beauty of the original movie).
Anyway that`s all my review on the film series, let’s all prepare a big celebration for the 10th anniversary of “Lilo & Stitch”. I`m not sure what to do for the celebration, I have planned to either make a video for YouTube or a piece of artwork for DA. But due to the importance of my Uni work I haven`t been able to think properly. But hopefully Uni will be over by June and I`ll be free to think of something.
